Instagram, Facebook, Threads and Messenger are coming back online after widespread “technical issues” took down many of Meta’s biggest apps for several hours on Wednesday. “We are 99% complete and just doing final inspections,” the company wrote in the letter. renew Nearly four hours after the outage was first confirmed.
The company did not detail the source of the problem or when it would be fully resolved. As of 4:30 p.m. PT on Wednesday, Meta’s status dashboard still showed some “significant disruption” to its business and transparency tools, but other services were marked as “resolved” or “recovering.” However, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads and Messenger appear to have largely recovered.
Thank you for bearing with us! We’re 99% done – just doing some final checks. We apologize to those affected by the outage.

Earlier in the day, there were over 90,000 problem reports on Facebook.com alone on DownDetector, with X and Bluesky users reporting problems loading and using Meta apps. For a while, even Meta’s corporate website displayed the text “This page is now unavailable.” When Engadget first contacted Meta for comment, the company pointed to a brief statement on X acknowledging that “technical issues are impacting some users’ ability to access our app.”
Meta last dealt with a major outage in March 2024, which resulted in users being unable to access its apps and services for two hours. Meta communications director Andy Stone blamed the outage on “technical issues,” which is the same explanation Meta has offered so far.
