The first weekend of September saw a record-breaking box office success with the release of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, the highly anticipated sequel to Tim Burton’s horror-comedy classic. According to Variety, the film debuted with an impressive $145.4 million, with $110 million coming from domestic audiences. This makes it the second-highest September opening of all time, trailing only 2017’s “The Last Jedi”, which launched with $123 million. It also surpassed other September releases like “It: Chapter 2”, which earned $91 million in 2019.
For 2024, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” holds the third-best domestic debut of the year, behind “Deadpool and Wolverine” with $211.4 million and “Inside Out 2”, which opened at $154.2 million.
The film’s massive success can be attributed to a strong marketing campaign and a resurgence of interest in the “Beetlejuice” franchise. Fans revisited the original movie, bolstered by the availability of the ’90s animated series on Tubi just ahead of the sequel’s release. The star-studded cast, including fan favorites like Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, and Jenna Ortega, also played a key role in its popularity. Ortega, riding high from her roles in “Wednesday” and the “Scream” sequels, brought even more buzz. Additionally, the film received glowing reviews after its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, helping to drive the film’s success through strong word-of-mouth.
