Campfire Secures $3.95 Million for Innovative Generative AI Game Engine
Campfire, based in San Francisco, has successfully raised $3.95 million in seed funding for its groundbreaking generative AI game engine, Sprites. This innovative platform allows developers to create AI agents with memory and emotions, enabling them to interact and engage with users in immersive online experiences. Sprites aims to revolutionize game development, interactive media, and consumer applications by making them more personal and dynamic.
The company’s debut game, Cozy Friends, serves as a prime example of AI-native gaming. It will be available on Steam for PC and iOS for mobile devices. Campfire co-founder Siamak Freydoonnejad believes that AI technology represents the most significant advancement in gaming since the advent of 3D graphics. Cozy Friends is set to demonstrate the potential of AI-driven life simulation games.

Campfire has successfully raised $3.95 million in seed round financing from a notable group of investors, including Y Combinator, FundersClub, Mercury founder Immad Akhund, game entrepreneur and investor Juha Paananen, Uken Games founder Chris Ye, and others.
The company is set to release its highly anticipated game, Cozy Friends, which is now available for pre-order. The game has already attracted significant interest, with a waiting list of over 20,000 eager players.
Cozy Friends is touted as the world’s first AI-native life simulation game, drawing comparisons to popular franchises like Animal Crossing and The Sims. According to co-founder Siamak Freydoonnejad, the game allows players to interact with AI agents that possess unique personalities, memories, and emotions, creating a deeply personalized and immersive gaming experience.
Juha Paananen, an investor at Campfire, praised the innovation, stating, “The move to AI-native games represents the biggest advancement in gaming since the transition to 3D. When I first saw a demo, I was blown away. We believe this technology will revolutionize gaming and entertainment, and Campfire is setting the standard for AI-native games with Cozy Friends and the Sprites toolset.”
Sprites, Campfire’s generative AI game engine, enhances games, interactive media, and consumer applications by enabling the creation of AI characters that can engage in conversations and join users on virtual adventures. This cutting-edge technology promises to redefine the gaming landscape, making experiences more interactive and engaging.
Founded in 2021 by longtime friends Siamak Freydoonnejad and Sina Zargaran, Campfire initially launched as a multiplayer gaming platform designed for remote teams. The company underwent a significant transformation after an internal hackathon in August 2023, where they developed an AI companion agent. This innovation led to a five-fold increase in user engagement within their own game, prompting a strategic pivot towards integrating advanced AI capabilities into gaming and entertainment.
“Generative AI is catalyzing a paradigm shift in how users engage with content in video games and entertainment apps,” said Freydoonnejad. “With AI companions that can converse and act autonomously, players can embark on new adventures while maintaining the context of their interactions. This approach makes the gaming experience more social, human, and rewarding. Our mission at Campfire is to build emotionally intelligent and ethical companions that users can connect with deeply, whether they’re playing games or using apps.”
The company’s innovative approach has already attracted interest from developers, including Remio VR, one of the first to adopt Campfire’s Sprites platform.
“We aimed to provide users with customizable AI characters, but achieving this was challenging,” said Jos van der Westhuizen, CEO of the Khosla Ventures-backed social VR company. “Creating such features usually demands extensive custom work. Thanks to Campfire’s Sprites, we delivered virtual pet companions to our users within days, greatly enhancing our game’s appeal and competitive edge.”
The seed funding, totaling $3.95 million, was secured from prominent investors such as Y Combinator, FundersClub, Mercury founder Immad Akhund, game entrepreneur Juha Paananen, Uken Games founder Chris Ye, and others. The funds will support Campfire’s mission to further develop its AI-driven gaming experiences and expand its impact on the broader entertainment industry.
Next Generation
Campfire, founded in 2021 by Siamak Freydoonnejad and Sina Zargaran, is revolutionizing interactive media with its AI-driven toolset, Sprites. This cutting-edge platform enables developers to create highly sophisticated conversational agents equipped with emotions, memory, and personalized interactions.
“We build tools for developers who will drive the next wave of interactive media, entertainment, and consumer applications using advanced AI,” said Freydoonnejad. “Our platform, Sprites, empowers developers to craft human-like AI agents that exhibit unique personalities and emotional depth.”
Sprites is designed to support the creation of AI-native content, including life simulation games akin to Animal Crossing or The Sims, but enhanced with AI agents possessing individual histories, speaking styles, memories, and emotions.
“What’s transformative about our technology is the level of immersion it provides,” Freydoonnejad explained. “Players can form meaningful, open-ended social relationships with these AI agents. These agents interact not only with players but also with other AI agents, showcasing the potential of interactive media created with our tools.”
The shift to generative AI began about a year ago, inspired by leading creative tech companies like Pixar and Epic Games. “These companies have pioneered breakthrough technologies that enable new content categories,” Freydoonnejad noted.
Initially focusing on a multiplayer gaming platform, Freydoonnejad and Zargaran pivoted after an internal hackathon revealed the potential of generative AI for gaming. “The impact on user engagement was dramatic,” Freydoonnejad said. “We realized that AI agents could enhance the gaming experience far beyond what we had anticipated.”
A prototype video released in November sparked significant interest among fans, despite the rising competition from well-funded AI NPC startups like Inworld AI and Convai. “We evaluated many tools and found that none offered the meaningful differentiation we were aiming for,” Freydoonnejad said.
Unlike other companies that focus on abstraction layers or base models, Campfire is committed to developing substantial, content-rich solutions. “We see Sprites as an all-in-one platform for generative AI across interactive media, entertainment, and consumer applications,” Freydoonnejad explained.
In addition to Sprites, Campfire is exploring various AI technologies that power their game, Cozy Friends. Although these technologies are not yet commercialized, they include advanced agent behaviors and media generation models. “Our inspiration came from addressing the ‘cold start’ problem in multiplayer games,” Freydoonnejad said. “By creating AI characters with personalities, we facilitated deeper social interactions among players, even when they knew they were interacting with AI.”
As Campfire continues to develop and refine its platform, it aims to lead the way in AI-driven interactive experiences, providing developers with the tools needed to create engaging and emotionally intelligent content.
