Following the runaway success of Wordle, The New York Times has introduced a new challenge for puzzle lovers, and this time, it’s all about math. “Digits,” the latest addition to its game catalog, allows players to flex their arithmetic skills with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Currently available in beta, the game is free to play online.
In Digits, players aim to match a target number using six provided numbers, combining them with basic math operations to get as close to the target as possible. It’s a puzzle that requires strategy and creativity, testing your math abilities without needing to use all six numbers.
The rating system is simple: hitting the target number earns you five stars, coming within 10 points scores three stars, and being within 25 points earns you one star. Each session offers five puzzles with increasingly complex numbers, providing a fun and challenging experience reminiscent of other New York Times games like Wordle and Spelling Bee.
The Times is using this beta version to gather feedback, address bugs, and determine whether Digits will proceed to full development. But for now, math lovers can dive into the fun on the New York Times Gaming website while it’s still available.
